Cooking Steak on a Rock

Yield: 2.00 Portion

Recipe Description

Cooking is one of my favorite outdoor activities. This recipe was created when we forgot the grate for our steaks at a clam bake. Now it goes down as a favorite for beach parties.

Ingredients

QuaUnitIngredient
2 ea 12 ounce New York strip steaks
1 tb cracked black pepper
1 cup salt water

Method & Notes

  1. Find a nice flat rock, about 12" square and 3 or 4" thick.
  2. Start a campfire on your rock. Continue to feed your fire for at least 45 minutes. Then let it burn down to coals.
  3. Scrape the coals off of the rock, packing them evenly around it.
  4. Wipe your rock down with a towel soaked in the salt water.
  5. Rub your steaks with the cracked pepper, and drop onto the rock. Beware that they will cook very quickly. I do not add any oil, because the rock is hot enough that the meat should not stick. Any oil will cause flareups.
  6. Cook on both sides, then eat.
